Italian for PhD and students enrolled in three-year or master’s degrees in English

Our Italian courses for international students enrolled in BA or master’s courses delivered in English are free and reserved to students who DON’T HAVE Italian curricular courses in their study plan (so already included in the Manifesto degli Studi of their degree course).

These courses are also open to international students enrolled in doctoral courses at the Università di Genova.

The Italian courses reserved for these kinds of students are held only in the second semester of each academic year.

Each course will last 40 hours, classes will be of 2 hours twice a week.

Classes are held online on Office 365 UniGe, with the exception of the final exam, which will be held exclusively in person in Genova.

These courses do not entitle students to either a grade out of 30 or to the recording of the mark or credits in the students' records and cannot be included in a study plan; students who pass the final exam may request a level assessment statement.

If you are a PhD student, and wish for the course's level assessment statement to be recognised as eligible towards your doctoral course, you must contact your coordinator and produce said statement.

If you are a student enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme delivered in English or a PhD student and you wish to attend an Italian course, you must formally state  your interest in following an Italian course to the Segreteria Didattica of your Department (if you are a student enrolled in Bachelor's or master’s courses) or by writing to: dottorato@segreterie.unige.it if you are a PhD student.

Next, depending on your situation, you need to do one of the following:

  • if you have never attended one of our Italian courses for PhD/students enrolled in Bachelor's or master's degree courses delivered in English, you must sit the placement test  in order to be placed in a class suitable for your level.

    or

  • only if you have, in previous years, attended one of our Italian courses for PhD/students enrolled in BAs or master's degree courses delivered in English, and if you passed the final exam, you can ask to be placed in an Italian course of a higher level than the one obtained, without taking the placement test, by enrolling (from January 2026) here (link not yet available)

  • 2026 Test : where and when

The placement test will take place only in presence in Genova on 5th February 2026.

Students who have expressed their interest in following the dedicated italian course will receive on January 2026 an email to their institutional Unige address (NOT their private one) with informations about the exact time and place of the test.

Absolute beginners

Even those who have never studied Italian must take the placement test.

The free online courses with a teacher are offered only to those who will sit the placement test.

Classes

The number of courses available (from A1 to C1 level) will depend on the number of students taking part. There will be no C2 Italian course.

In order to be moved to a  course of a different level than the one you were placed in based on the test results, students must attend  their assigned course in the first week of class and ask the teacher to be moved to another course: the teacher will evaluate and possibly accept the request.

Only those who attend at least 50% of the classes will be able to take the final exam, which will take place exclusively in person in Genova on a date that will be communicated by the course's teacher.

To receive the level assessment statement

Students who have passed the final exam and want a level assessment statement, have to write to: clat@unige.it providing their surname, first name, matriculation number, course and level passed. A payment for a 16 Euro stamp duty must be made in order to receive the level statemente. After checking that the exam has been passed, a link will be sent to make a virtual payment. Only upon reception of a receipt of payment will a statement be issued.

By info: clat@unige.it  Always write your first name, last name and registration number so we can help you faster.
